ABOUT APCL Consumer protection legislation is an integral part of the consumer protection framework in any country. The Asia Pacific region has seen a wide diversity in consumer protection legislation using a variety of techniques. In many of these countries, consumer protection law and redress mechanisms are still rudimentary. But in some, significant progress has been made, and in a few, spectacular and novel approaches have been adopted. Consumer protection laws and experience with their enforcement in other countries are a valuable reference point for consumer protection authorities and consumer organisations. The objectives of the Asia Pacific Consumer Law (APCL) website are to provide:
Online since 7 June 2001, it is managed by CIROAP with the cooperation of CI members. The pages within this website are arranged by country with separate folders for statutes, case law and articles. The website is intended to provide a general understanding of the subject matter and, where possible, allow reference to the statutes themselves in full either by their inclusion in the pages of the site or by links to the websites of the government or member organisation of the country concerned. The material included in each country webpage is provided by CI member organisations which take responsibility to verify its accuracy. The APCL website is a project within CIROAP's Consumer Protection Programme. The ultimate objective of the programme is to facilitate the adoption of a comprehensive set of consumer laws and their rigorous enforcement in the region. Other projects in the programme include research, advice on law reform, consultation meetings, and capacity building training workshops and seminars for consumer activists and regulators. The programme adopts a broad perspective of consumer protection and hence includes within its ambit such concerns as good governance and the eradication of corruption.
