This project is an initiative of the Consumer Protection and Law Programme of Consumers International (CI) Asia Pacific Office. CI members participating in this project are from Hong Kong, India, Japan and Malaysia.  The project will involve three phases. The first involves detailed country studies on the typology of different forms of consumer credit, analysis of each credit type, existing 'credit institutions', credit marketing, 'credit rating' and analysis of existing laws. The second phase will involve participating members holding a national workshop in their respective countries. In the third phase, a regional conference on consumer credit will bring together CI members comprising consumer organisations and government agencies from around Asia to participate and contribute towards identifying components of a model law on consumer credit for this region. Although participation in this project is confined to members from four countries, the project aims to develop a framework and methodology for research that can, with appropriate amendments, be replicated in other Asian countries.

CI acknowledges with appreciation support for this project from the Anne Fransenfund of Consumentenbond, the Netherlands, the Japan Foundation Asia Center and CI members in Hong Kong and Japan. [more]
